MSI debuts Wind Top All-in-One AE2010 desktop

August 26, 2009

Looks like the Wind Top gets an upgrade. At $649 not much more than the original but the specs are much better like an Athlon X2 Dual Core, 4 GB Ram, and 6 USB ports.  Check it out at engadget.

Wii Homebrew and USB drive hacks

August 24, 2009

I’ve been using the Homebrew channel for sometime with the Twilight hack, but there have been updates to the system menu that I’ve haven’t downloaded for fear of breaking the Homebrew Channel and then having to find a Twilight game disc again.  Mike & Heather have the best walk through I’ve seen on installing Homebrew on a system menu 4.0 without the twilight hack and better than that, they have a walk through on a USB drive hack that allows you to back up your games to a hard drive and play them from the hard drive through the Homebrew Channel.  I’ll be giving this a try and report back but definitely worth checking out.

Zune HD applications confirmed

August 24, 2009

There had not been a confirmation on apps and games for the Zune HD, but over the weekend the apps menu was spotted and the new box mentions games.  Other than that we don’t know anything else.  It could be there for backward compatibility for the previous games, but lets hope the XNA dev kit gets updated with the new capabilities of the Zune HD.  The apps menu in Marketplace would seem to indicate that there will be more than just games.  Reading material and screenshots can be found at:  neowin, engadget, and more engadget.

Verizon Omnia i910 hacked with WinMo 6.5

August 20, 2009

I was 3 months away from my “new every 2” date and my HTC touch died out of the blue.  Of course now Verizon is trying to clear them out for $9.99, but the service center had none and wanted to charge me $50, even though I had the “special” insurance.  I know the Diamond 2 and Omnia HD are around the corner but there was no way I was paying it, so I picked up the Omnia i910 for $99 and then they screwed me on my anniversary date.  There’s no way I’d pay more than $99 anyways and I’m sure they’ll gouge us for an unreasonable $200 – $300 when the new phones are released.

Anyways, I got the phone and it feels and looks pretty darn good.  Then the test, once sync’d with Exchange I tried dialing a number, one handed.  It was horrible!  The “TouchWiz” interface sucked, it’s a phone for heavens sake.  You should be able to find a contact and dial, easy.  Not the case, in the short few minutes I had the phone.  I’m sure others may have different experiences but my expectations are my own.

I had done some research before on cooked (hacked) 6.5 ROMs and I new some people were having success with them on the Omnia.  So I did some digging and there is a ton of stuff out there and it’s not for the “faint of heart”.  WARNING – you can brick your phone doing this.

Movie Maker Released

August 19, 2009

Movie Maker is finally out of beta (I was beginning to think it was a Google app).  Part of the free Live Essentials, you can now download/update your Live apps to get it.  I tried it just a bit and it seems very intuitive and supports AVHD, no it won’t take on the big boys, but for quick, simple editing it looks fine.  You can find out more at the Movie Maker site and at LiveSide.

Zune HD roundup

August 17, 2009

Just catching up on the Zune HD news.  It’s now available for pre-order at the usual places.  You might be able to “touch” one at Best Buy around August 23, depending on where you live.  The release is September 15th, as the rumors thought.  A lot of good videos out there now and details on the Nvidia Tegra chipset as well.

As I mentioned in a previous post, games and apps have been missing from all releases, yet this thing begs for them.  There have been rumors now that Microsoft has been offering real $ for iPhone developers to port their apps.  I would have to bet that they will have something but maybe not on 9/15.  Check out the story at Techradar.

The Zune HD as part of a Microsoft media hub story has also been talked about for CEDIA.  With the Zune HD, Xbox updates, Windows 7, and Home Server, who else can tell that story.  I was saddened to hear that the Zune software might have some issues with Media Center protected HD formats.  Sounds like shooting themselves in the foot when they really have a winning story.  Check it out at engadget and a video of the Zune HD hooked up to an HDTV at Lifehacker.

Still Radio Shack to me

August 12, 2009

They can change their name to “The Shack”, but Radio Shack will always have a place in my heart.  I actually sold Tandy computers for a brief period and remember the “trash 80” well.  If you want to take a trip down memory lane, head over to a archive of Radio Shack catalogs at radioshackcatalogs.com, it’s great retro fun!

MSI WindTop now with Windows 7 RTM

August 12, 2009

I decided to wipe my WindTop and put the RTM of Windows 7 on it.  Installation was not much different than the RC.  A nice surprise was that the touch screen calibration worked fine as soon as it booted up.  A lot of people had problems with the calibration on the RC, including me.  The only way around it was to install the XP software calibration that came with the WindTop.  I’m happy to say that it worked “out of the box” with the RTM.  I haven’t done much more than that, but I’d say that’s already an improvement.

Another mini, this time a Dell

August 12, 2009

It looks like Dell is trying another mini form factor with its Inspiron zino HD.  Not much to go on except over at engadget.

Zune HD – Official Announcements?

August 12, 2009

Supposedly Microsoft will be making official announcements on pricing and release dates for the Zune HD.  As of this writing no official word yet, but gadgetlab and MaximumPC seem to have some goods.  Still no word on games or apps but one of the videos floating around has a Microsoft rep saying that they aren’t prepared to say anything on apps and games and that an announcement will be made in the future.
