Windows 7 Media Center review

July 28, 2009

engadgetHD has a nice walk thru of Windows 7 Media Center.  I have found it to be much better than Vista Media Center.  One thing that was great for me was that I always had problems with my Hauppauge 1250 and clear QAM wasn’t available in Media Center.

After installing Windows 7 it recognized the 1250 without a problem and upon setting up Media Center it found the QAM channels and matched them with the guide perfectly.  I’m sure your mileage will vary but this was a huge advance from Vista.

WHS Power Pack 3 Beta

July 28, 2009

I decided to give the PP3 beta a shot on my Windows Home Server.  Mainly this is a Windows 7 update, but can be used on Vista as well.  The main enhancements are:

  • Library integration for Windows 7 and Media Center
  • Image backup for Windows 7 computers
  • Automatically move Recorded TV to Home Server
  • Archive Recorded TV to different formats

The install was painless on the server, although it has to be removed before installing the released version (Date TBD).PP3 install After rebooting the WHS my connector on my Windows 7 RC desktop updated on it’s own.  At that point I could go into Libraries and see the integration with the Shared Folders.pp3 library integrationMusic, Pictures, and Videos integrate automatically with the Windows 7 library.  Launching Media Center produced an install prompt for the updated MCE connector.  After installing you have options for moving and archiving Recorded TV. pp3 mce settingsThere’s also a console view available to check on the health of your Home Server from within Media Center. pp3 console viewOverall the experience was good, I haven’t tried the image based backup yet but the Library integration is well worth it.  No more going to “Shared Folders” and it makes Media Player and Media Center easier to integrate.

Report: Steve Jobs Happy With Apple’s Tablet, Fast Tracks It For Early 2010

July 24, 2009

There have been numerous rumors over the last year about a famed Mac Tablet, today they seemed to really heat up with some credible coverage.  Both TechCrunch and  engadget have some articles about it.  Although recent revenue numbers don’t confirm it, Microsoft has been catching up to Apple in the marketing and mind share space.  Windows 7, Zune HD, Xbox updates, TV ads, and now retail stores.  Apple has secured the premium laptop space but nothing has been a “grand slam” lately, just nice upgrades to maturing products.  If the tablet rumor is true it could be another game changer for Apple.

Gigabyte Booktop M1022 and TouchNote T1028 tablet PC make their way to US

July 17, 2009

A competitor to the ASUS T91, the MSI TouchNote has a 10.1” screen versus the T91 8.9”.  It has a few more features than the T91 but at the heart it is a netbook (Atom).  It’s listed at Amazon, but not available at this posting.

July 8, 2009

A nice trip down software memory lane at MaximumPC.  Some of my favs:  Zork I, AmigaOS, PageMaker and the Mosaic browser.  I remember having to pay for the browser and the TCPIP stack.
