Did Apple Move The Mobile Device Forward With iPhone 3.0? – Mobile Blog – InformationWeek
March 19, 2009No doubt the iPhone is cool and Apple’s marketing is second to none. But with all the hoopla this week surrounding the 3.0 release of the OS, I have to agree with most the points in this post. Everyone gets so worked up about the app store on the iPhone, and yes it’s convenient, but developers have be rolling out apps for WinMo for a long time. I especially liked the demo where in games the developer will be able to create purchases within the game. So you get hooked on a cheap or free game, but every time you get to a new level or want a better gun, you have to purchase it. Convenient, but I can see those bills from the appstore making some parents pretty unhappy. We definitely need more cool phones for WinMo, like the Omnia and Diamond, but enough already.

Downloads: Calibre Manages Your E-Book Collection
March 16, 2009I saw this on Lifehacker and Downloadsquad and decided to give it a try. I have quite a library of PDF ebooks and currently only manage it by organizing them in a directory. I thought about a small SharePoint site or desktop search with an iFilter (and still might for search) but this looks to be a lot easier and still give some search and extra features like syncing with the Sony PRS 505, which I have.
The install on 64 bit Vista went fine and adding books to the collection was straightforward. It does have an ISBN feature that allows you to import the meta data automatically, which worked well.
I need to investigate more advanced features and syncing, but it may be worth the look.
Averatec D1100 All in one – UGLY
March 16, 2009Someone hit this with an ugly stick. Some sites actually liked the design, I suppose they thought the LCD arm was innovative and maybe it is, but it basically looks like a closed laptop with a big ass LCD arm built into it. Pass on this one.

Convergence 2009
March 15, 2009I spent the last week in New Orleans at the annual Microsoft conference for Dynamics customers. Dynamics being the old Microsoft Business Solutions that now comprises of AX (Axapta), NAV (Navision), GP (Great Plains), and SL (Solomon). After a few days of detox, I can reflect a little bit on what I saw and heard.
The Europeans are wrestling away more control, I’m sure to try and compete with their old friends from SAP. Funny thing, most the real talent is still in Fargo. I have to say that AX is looking pretty damn good, but it’s still a monster and is definitely upper tier.
GP 11 is starting to look good and is still the strength for North America.
Across all product lines SharePoint technologies are continuing to be bolstered and improved. In addition, SRS will become more important to all products, especially GP.
I’d have to say with the economy, the turn out wasn’t bad and the company was great. Although we sorely missed some Fargonians (you know who you are).
Update: The official GP blog is here.
A touching update to Dell’s all-in-one desktop | Crave – CNET
March 15, 2009Another all-in-one makes an appearance. The original XPS One had favorable reviews, but I don’t think it faired well in the market. The new Studio One 19 takes it to the next level with touch screen and other additions. It looks to compete more directly with the iMac in features and price.
